One Herb for Stress and Anxiety


Jatamansi, also known as “tapaswani” in Ayurveda, is a perennial, dwarf, hairy, herbaceous and endangered plant species. It acts as a brain tonic and helps to improve memory and brain functions by preventing cell damage due to its antioxidant property. It also calms down the brain and manages anxiety as well as insomnia. According to Ayurveda, Jatamansi helps in preventing wrinkles due to its Snigdha (oily) nature. It also promotes wound healing due to its Ropan (healing) property. It is known as Spikenard in English and also called Nardin, Jatamansi is widely grown in the mountain range of Himalayas, Nepal and China. It is a slowly vanishing ayurvedic herb, Jatamansi oil has been used since ancient times as perfume, traditional medicine and religious rituals.

The plant grows to a height of 1metre and bears pink bell-shaped flowers. The rhizomes of the plant are pressed and distilled to produce a deep amber-coloured thick essential oil. Nard or jatamansi essential oil is used for making perfume, incense sticks and various herbal formulations. The potent herbal powder is beneficial in boosting memory and possesses soothing and relaxing properties. It is an aromatic herb which has a cooling effect on the body and is used in traditional medicine for treating psychological disorders like depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. 

Jatamansi is cool in nature and has an extremely bitter taste. The herbs that have such properties help in balancing the Pitta dosha in the body. It’s special effect is on our mind, it helps in improving the brain’s functions and curing several psychiatric conditions, depression, stress, etc. Even if a person is already taking medicines for psychiatric conditions he/ she can still make use of jatamansi side by side as it is very safe and beneficial. It also helps in providing our hair the required nourishment for growth. Many of the hair oils available in the market has jatamansi in it.


The best way to consume jatamansi is by preparing a cool decoction. We can make a decoction by boiling two cups of water in a saucepan. Boil the water till one cup water is evaporated. Once done switch the gas off and add one tspn of jatamansi churna and cover it with a lid. Let it rest for about 30 minutes, then strain it and consume one cup before going to bed. If preparing this decoction is not convenient for one then they can simply consume proprietary medicines like Actived India Solac Med syrup or tablets. 


The results are seen in about one week in terms of sleep, stress, thoughts, etc.
