Management of Insomnia with Ayurveda

CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND REMEDIES FOR INSOMNIA

Insomnia, also known as Nidra Nash in terms of Ayurveda, is a sleep disorder in which the person faces difficulty falling or staying asleep or causes you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up. Ayurveda gives a lot of importance to sleep by considering it as one of the 3 pillars of life- Aahar (Diet), Bhramacharya (Celibacy) and Nidraa (Sleep). Imbalance in any of these pillars can cause serious harm to the body. In Metropolitan cities almost 1/3 of the people face insomnia. While explaining the importance of insomnia Ayurveda states that lack of sleep or inappropriate sleep for a long period of time can be the cause of ill health, unhealthy weight loss, impotency, infertility, etc.  Insomnia can sap not only your energy level and mood but also your health, work performance and quality of life. The amount of sleep required varies from person to person, but most adults require 7-8 hours of sleep. Acute insomnia, which is usually a result of traumatic events or stress, lasts for days or weeks. Whereas Chronic insomnia might last for a month or more, it may be associated with other medical conditions or medications.
