How to cure Cervical Pain and Spondylitis?

GET RELIEF FROM NECK PAIN|

Cervical Stiffness is termed as Manya Stambha. Manya meaning neck and stambha meaning stiffness. It is characterized by soreness and difficulty in moving the neck, especially when trying to turn the head to the side. It may also be accompanied by a headache, neck pain, shoulder pain and/or arm pain. In order to look sideways or over the shoulder, an individual may need to turn the entire body instead of the stiff neck. Neck stiffness may also develop as a reaction and result of muscle spasm in various conditions that cause neck pain, including traumatic injuries. In simple words some patients experience this pain generally after they wake up and in some cases it develops later in the day after some strenuous activity, such as moving furniture. Mostly the pain and stiffness goes away naturally within a week. However, how an individual manages and cares for the stiff neck symptoms, pain levels and recovery time may differ.

CAUSES:-

By far the most common cause of a stiff neck is a muscle strain or soft tissue sprain. Acharya Sushruta, father of surgery, has explained various causes of manya stambha 5000 years ago.  However, sleeping with the neck at an awkward position, slouching with poor posture while viewing the computer monitor or looking downward at a mobile phone for prolonged periods, experiencing excessive stress or anxiety (which can lead to tension in the neck), holding the neck in an abnormal position for a long period (such as cradling a phone between the neck and shoulder) can also be major causes. Because of all these  causes the joints, nerves and the veins get fatigued and they lose their tension. Hence vatta is vitiated in the body and it gets blocked at the neck region.

SYMPTOMS:-

Once vatta is blocked in the neck region, the patient experiences several symptoms like Neck pain or stiffness(this may be the main symptom and pain may get worse when you move your neck), nagging soreness in the neck, swelling, morning stiffness, sleeplessness, muscle spasms, clicking, popping or grinding sound when you move your neck, dizziness, headaches, etc.

TREATMENT:-

Ayurveda has explained various therapies to treat chronic and severe cases of Manya Stambha. There are 2 basic ways of treating it;

1] Snehan – It simply means application of oil over the region causing pain. This helps in pacifying the air element i.e. Vatta dosha. For cervical stiffness one must use Vishagarbha Taila (oil), it is an ayurvedic formulation specially meant for all the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal diseases. It is also meant for external purposes, not internal use by any means. This oil is easily available in various brands, one can use any brand. However, if this oil is not available then as an alternative one can use Mahanarayan taila. Take about 5-15 ml in a bowl, warm it a bit, apply it to the region causing pain and keep for 15 minutes.

This step should be followed by

2] Swedan – This means Fomentation. Nowadays readymade hot water bags are available so one can use them. Even ice-packs can be used for the same purpose. Using an ice-pack will give you instant results but the results gotten from the hot water bag will last for a longer period of time. For best results one can use an ice-pack and a hot water bag on alternative days.

If you are someone who has been having severe or chronic pain for years and years then ayurveda has certain promising therapies to help you out. Those therapies are sneha kashay basti (medicated enema), manya basti, nasya (nasal instillation), dhumapana (medicated smoking), etc.
