GETTING RID OF LOW BACK PAIN NATURALLY|

Lower Back Pain is a common, painful condition affecting the lower portion of the spine. Low back pain is caused by injury to a muscle (strain) or ligament (sprain). Common causes include improper lifting, poor posture, lack of regular exercise, a fracture, a ruptured disc or arthritis. Often, the only symptom is pain in the lower back. Most low back pain goes away on its own in two to four weeks. Physiotherapy and pain relievers can help. One of the most commonly seen causes in today’s modern world is the increase of sedentary occupations and many hours spent sitting at a computer where the back looses its strength, with the addition of poor body posture, lack of mobility and stress, over the years this can accumulate to severe back issues that need a specific therapy that works on a very deep level other than just a regular massage. Musculoskeletal disorders are mainly Vata which is aggravated and can create more dryness, stiffness, pain and tightness in the affected areas, this also leads to an aggravation in Pitta dosha as there will be inflammation in the area which cause more pain. The nerves are also found throughout the muscles and when they also become stiff and tight the conduction of nerve impulse is also effected known as Vata obstruction.

KATI BASTI

Ayurveda has the privilege to provide best treatments, panchakarma and therapies for lower back pain and other related painful issues. Amongst all the treatments explained in Ayurveda, Kati Basti is a very popular one. Kati means our back and basti means to hold. In this treatment a well made of dough from black lentil flour or urad dal, is placed over the problem area and filled with medicated oil heated to a specific temperature and held at this temperature for a specific period of time. This helps to soften the rigid, tight and hard tissue which results in easing pain and increasing mobility of the affected area. Once the dam/ well is removed a back massage is given followed by a herbal steam treatment to help deepen the overall effect of the treatment.

PROCEDURE TO PERFORM IT AT HOME – 

Step one – The patient has to lie down (belly facing down)on a flat surface, preferably a cot or bed. Also he/ she should be on an empty stomach.

Step two – The person performing the therapy should make a well of black lentil flour as shown above. The well should cover the lower back bones (lumbar vertebrae), the sacrum and the coccyx (tailbone). The height of the walls of the well should be 4 to 5 inches. 

Step three – The gap between the back and the ring is called the junction. Seal the junction with wet flour to avoid any leakages. 

Step four – Choose a medicated a oil, take about 50-60 ml of it in a bowl and heat it for a few seconds (do not heat too much as that might burn the skin). Pour this oil in the ring with the help of the cotton. Just dip the cotton in the oil and then squeeze it into the pool. Leave it for 4 to 7 minutes. Once the oil is back to room temperature then put the oil back into the bowl with a piece of cotton. Heat the same oil again and repeat the same procedure for 5 times. 

Step five – After the treatment remove the flour wall and proceed with a massage. 

OILS TO CHOOSE FROM – 

There are several medicated oils to choose from. The use of oils generally varies from person to person as it depends on the prakruti and complains of the patient. Bala tel, Ksheerabala, dhanwantari tel, Chandanbala lakshadi, Ashwagandha Bala tel and many more medicated oils are available in the market. One oil which is particularly very beneficial is sesame oil.
