End Stress, Anxiety and Depression

AYURVEDIC THERAPY – SHIRODHARA|

Shirodhara comes from the two Sanskrit words “shiro” (head) and “dhara” (flow). It’s an Ayurvedic healing technique that involves having someone pour liquid — usually oil, milk, buttermilk, or water — onto your forehead. It’s often combined with a body, scalp, or head massage. Ayurveda considers the human body as an inverted tree where the roots are at the top and the branches are pointing downwards. Therefore our head becomes the roots, the central part, the thorax and the abdomen becomes the trunk and the limbs become the branches of the tree. Just like the roots nurture and control all the activities in the well – being of the tree, our head is the operational center of the entire body. No matter how bad the condition is, in storms, hurricanes and tornadoes if the roots of the tree are strong, the tree will always stand straight. This same concept is applied to our head, if the mind is strong enough, the man/ woman can overcome various difficulties in life. For these reasons the head is called the Uttam Anga, the most superior organ. These days we hear a lot from our elders and mentors about stress, we all are turning towards spiritual activities and we are indulging into activities like meditation and yoga to relieve stress. You won’t believe that in diabetes patients more problems are caused by stress rather than by eating sweets. In other words the head is like a control station, if you take care of it then the body stays healthy and functions smoothly. A disturbed mind is the root cause of several diseases and hence ayurveda has always focused on balancing the mind, body and soul.

HOW IS SHIRODHARA DONE?

It begins with first examining the prakruti, food habits and lifestyle of the patient. After careful assessment the medications are planned and advised. Shirodhara is done by using a wide range of medicated fluids like herbal oils, oils processed with medicated decoctions, milk, buttermilk or ghee. Each of these have their own different role, but the most commonly used oil is Til or Sesame oil. If one is facing hair fall then sheer shirodhara, means medicated milk or shir bala tel is done. Different oils can be used in combination depending on the practical experience of the physician.
