AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR SCIATICA PAIN |

Sciatica is a term used to describe nerve pain in the leg that is caused by irritation and/or compression of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica originates in the lower back, radiates deep into the buttock, and travels down the leg. Patient feels a tingling sensation, numbness and radiating pain. In older times sciatica was known as Gridhrasi. It is one among the 80 types of Vata imbalance disorders. Vata is that which spreads, wherever there is pain vata is also present there. Lower back pain and sciatica are the most common problems affecting 80 percent of people throughout their lifetime.

SYMPTOMS:-

The symptoms of sciatica are commonly felt along the path of the large sciatic nerve. Sciatica is often characterized by one or more of the following features:

1] Pain – Sciatica pain is typically felt like a constant burning sensation or a shooting pain starting in the lower back or buttock and radiating down the front or back of the thigh and leg and/or feet.

2] Numbness – Sciatica pain may be accompanied by numbness in the back of the leg. Sometimes, tingling and/or weakness may also be present.

3] One-sided symptoms – Sciatica typically affects one leg. The condition often results in a feeling of heaviness in the affected leg.1 Rarely, both legs may be affected together.

4] Posture induced symptoms – Sciatica symptoms may feel worse while sitting, trying to stand up, bending the spine forward, twisting the spine, lying down, and/or while coughing. The symptoms may be relieved by walking or applying a heat pack over the rear pelvic region.

CAUSES:-

There can be several causes of this condition like improper lifting of weights, improper posture, keeping wallet and stuff in the back pocket, etc this negatively affects the sciatic nerve. Also activities that increase the vata dosha could be another cause. Even constipation and indigestion is witnessed in patients having vata related disorders.

TYPES:-

In ayurveda two types of Gridhrasi (sciatica) are explained,

1] Vataj Gridhrasi – In this type patient experiences pain but there is also severe stiffness. There are pulsations in the back

2] Vata Kaphaja Gridhrasi – One experiences drowsiness, lack of energy, indigestion, constipation, weakness along with the features of Vataj gridhrasi. Mainly the patients feel that their leg freezes for a few seconds.

TREATMENT:-

“Vayu Nasti Ruja”

This shloka simply means there is no pain without aggravation of vata dosha, the air element. Once this air is aggravated, the patient experiences pain. Therefore Basti is the best treatment for vata aggravation. Certain tikta dravyas (bitter herbs) are added with medicated oils, boiled milk or medicated ghritas. Depending on the patient’s body type, strength and conditions, certain combinations of medicated enemas are made and administered through the anal route. Medicated enema gives beautiful and immediate results to the patient, the pain decreases and not just the temporary but one gets long term results in a very short period of time. If the patient is not comfortable with panchakarma or the basti karma then they can gain results with certain medications. The proprietary medicine Actived India Ortho – C Med tablet, contains herbs like Chitrak, Haritaki, Erand Mool, Bibhitaki, Hingu, Ajmoda and Dalchini in extract form. These herbs help a lot not only for the pain but also in proper digestion of food, which is a root cause of sciatica. So the dosage is 2 tablets twice or thrice a day with a glass of warm water followed by an external application of Actived India Otho – C Med oil. Also one can take steam with a hot water bag, warm cloth or nadi swed. If Ortho – C oil or tablets are not available then one can simply opt for mahanarayan oil or sesame oil instead.
