What is Mucormycosis?

MUCORMYCOSIS – BLACK FUNGUS |

Mucormycosis (previously called zygomycosis) is a serious but rare fungal infection caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes. These molds are nothing but fungal spores which live throughout the environment. If a person inhales the spores those will enter the lungs and affect them and also the system while developing possible symptoms. This is a severe and life threatening condition and it’s symptoms may lead to death.

WHO IS MOST PRONE TO GET THIS FUNGUS?

Those patients who are immunocompromised must be very careful when it comes to these infections like patients having uncontrolled diabetes which means those consuming long term medicines for diabetes. The SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus), fungal infection, psoriasis, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis and lichen planus, etc all these are auto-immune diseases, wherein our own immunity attacks the body. So in such conditions, from the western medicines Prednisolone and such steroids are used which are immunosuppressants. They are needed to save the patient’s life. On the other hand, long term use of certain anticoagulants, blood thinners, aspirin and warfarin makes a person more prone to this kind of fungus. Those with cancer or having done organ transplant must be very careful. Over here the whole point is the immunity of the person.

SYMPTOMS:-

1] Rhinocerebral mucormycosis – It is an infection that affects the sinus and then spreads to the brain. The patient develops one sided headache, nasal bleeding or black lesions on the nasal bridge. It is a rare opportunistic infection of the sinuses, nasal passages, oral cavity, and brain caused by saprophytic fungi. The infection can rapidly result in death. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis commonly affects individuals with diabetes and those in immunocompromised states.

2] Pulmonary mucormycosis – It is the most common fungal infection most often seen in immunocompromised patients. The fungus grows on decaying food, soil, and animal excrement. Patients usually become infected by inhalation of spores and affecting the lungs. Cough, cold, fever and breathlessness are often witnessed.

3] Cutaneous mucormycosis – This affects the skin. Bleeding, pain, itching and burning sensation are it’s symptoms.

4] Gastrointestinal mucormycosis – The symptoms of this are varied and depend on the affected site. Nonspecific abdominal pain and distention associated with nausea and vomiting are the most common symptoms. Fever and hematochezia may also occur.

5] Disseminated mucormycosis – It occurs when the infection spreads through the bloodstream to affect another part of the body. The infection most commonly affects the brain, but also can affect other organs such as the spleen, heart, and skin. It mostly develops in the person who is already having a long term medical condition. There may be mental changes and diagnosis is difficult.

WHAT IS THE AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE?

The ayurvedic interpretation is that by looking at the symptoms and studying them we can co- relate this to krumi (Worms). There are 20 types of krumi and as per the symptoms we see that the mainly the Rakta and the Kapha dosha are affected. So we can diagnose this and treat the patient as per the rakta krumi and kapha krumi. Overall we see great results when it comes to enhancing immunity and getting over the symptoms.

In Corona we have seen that severe cases and serious patients in the hospitals were advised to take the praanrakshak kadha, madhav rasayan and some potent medicines and they saw complete recovery with the Ayurvedic Immunomodulator. Similarly in mucormycosis as well it is always best to be a step ahead, to go with the preventive measures first. Over here those medicines having an action on the kapha as well as the rakt must be taken. For example, Vidang, devdaru, neem, karanja, musta, hinga, palaash, are all krumighna medications which enhance the immunity, act as immunomodulators, eliminate the krumi and are great for the respiratory system. Even pimpali is one of them, it works wonders for skin infections, fungal infections and helps the respiratory system. One of the best immunomodulators is Guduchi (giloy), to know in detail watch the video via the link mentioned below. Vasa or adulsa is great for mucormycosis. Speaking about the proprietary medicines then a combination of Actived India Bronko Med syrup and Psora- C Med syrup will help the lungs as well as the fungal infection.
