TRIPHALA- BENEFITS, USES AND DOSAGE
The word Triphala is a combination of two Sanskrit words; Tri – three and phala- fruits. Those 3 fruits are Amalaki (Amla), Hritaki (Harde) and Bibhitaki (baheda). In Ayurvedic medicine, Triphala is considered a tridoshic rasayana, meaning that it has the properties to support all three doshas (Vata, pitta and kapha). These qualities are believed to enhance strength and immunity and may be applied to the treatment of numerous health conditions. Triphala is available in powder, juice, extract, capsule, or tablet form, and it is easily found online and in many natural food and supplements stores.
WHAT IS DETOXIFICATION?
If the water in a fish tank becomes dirty do you add fresh water directly to keep it clean? No, we first remove the dirty water out and then add the fresh and clean water. The same concept works on our body, if the toxins present in our body are not removed our body becomes toxic. The process of removing these toxins out of our body is called detoxification. On the other hand, our kidney, liver, skin and intestines are responsible for removing the toxins from our body and hence they are called the eliminating organs. If these four organs do not perform their function properly then the toxins will keep increasing further leading to toxicity of the body. One can use these three fruits/ herbs individually also.
a] Amlaki – It contains 20 times more Vitamin C than orange juice. It has a cooling effect on our body. It balances the pitta dosha, improves the functions of the liver and maintains healthy levels of weight. It also improves a weak immune system.
b] Bibhitaki – It takes care of the kapha dosha. Breathlessness, cough, cold and all the problems related to kapha can be reduced by bibhitaki.
c] Haritaki – It balances vata dosha. It has a scraping effect on the body as it has mild laxative action and maintains healthy levels or weight.
Acharya Vagbhata said that there are very few herbs that balance all the three doshas and he also states that triphala is one of them.
HOW DOES TRIPHALA HELP?
1] Triphala will improve the function of the eliminating organs making this master cleanse one of the best ways to cleanse your body.
2] Triphala will promote proper digestion. Constipation and indigestion are the 2 major reasons for poor health, low immune system and the cause of several diseases.
We notice that the people who go to the gym mostly consume whey protein as they should, but some are not able to digest it or it does not suit them. Adding any digestive enzyme or simply adding triphala will help in digesting the whey protein.
Even for gaining weight we often believe that we need to eat a lot of meals but will our body be able to digest all those meals and absorb all the nutrients that we are consuming? Triphala will help in absorption of the nutrients, improve appetite and promote proper digestion.
3] Triphala is a natural fat burner. Even if a person is very skinny then too much unwanted fat is never good for you. Our liver is the organ responsible for metabolising fats and for fat breakdown secretion of bile is very important. Triphala is one of those herbs which are widely known and used for weight loss because it improves the function of the liver and increases the secretion of the bile juice.
DOSAGE:-
One can consume 1 tspn of ashwagandha powder with jaggery or honey. And at night before going to bed 1 tspn with half a cup of warm milk or warm water. If you are not comfortable with jaggery, honey and milk then consume it with warm water both the times. If you do not want to taste the powder then you can consume the tablet form instead. Even patients having diabetes can consume ashwagandha with jaggery as it would not increase diabetes. Triphala has a laxative effect, which proponents suggest can “cleanse the system.” Depending on how much is prescribed, Triphala may be used as bowel tonic at lower doses, alleviating gas and promoting digestion, or as a purgative (strong laxative) at higher doses.
