LEUCORRHOEA (VAGINAL WHITE DISCHARGE) – TREATMENT AND HOME REMEDY|
Leucorrhoea, flow of a whitish, yellowish, or greenish discharge from the vagina of the female that may be normal or that may be a sign of infection. Such discharges may originate from the vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, or, most commonly, the cervix. It may occur during pregnancy and is considered normal when the discharge is thin, white, and relatively odourless. Physiologic leucorrhoea is a normal condition occurring within several months to a year of the onset of menses in adolescent girls and is sometimes present in newborn girls, usually lasting one to two months. However, in many cases, leucorrhoea is a sign of infection, especially when the discharge is yellow or green, has an offensive odour, and is accompanied by irritation, itching, pain, or tissue inflammation. It is overall a very troublesome condition associated with a lot of pain, burning, itching, back pain, weakness and it hampers the day to day routine of a woman.
In Ayurvedic terminology the white discharge is known as Shweta Pradar. Shweta meaning white and pradar meaning discharge. As for modern terminology it is called leucorrhoea. It is always wise to cure this condition in the beginning itself in order to avoid further complications. According to Ayurveda this white discharge is not a disease but it might be a symptom of several diseases and it may also be upadrav, a complication of many diseases. There are various types of discharges; clear discharge, curdy discharge, red, yellow or brownish discharge, etc. Various discharges are associated with various bacterial infections and fungal infections for which Ayurveda has the best results.
CAUSES –
1] Unhygienic activities – Post- coital burning or not cleaning the vaginal area after intercourse or in our normal day to day life, overall not maintaining the hygiene of the private area is the foremost cause of leucorrhoea.
2] Garbhapata – It means frequent abortions or repeated abortions. This can also be a major cause of leucorrhoea.
3] Adhyasana – It means repeated food intake, as in another food intake is done without the prior intakes proper digestion. This is pretty common in today’s time but this can further become a cause of leucorrhoea.
These are some of the causes that imbalance the vata dosha, further leading to thick, white and foul smelling vaginal discharge.
TREATMENT –
From an Ayurvedic point of view we need to normalize the function of the Apana Vayu and balance the doshas with panchakarma. Apana is the prana vayu that involves the downward and outward flow of energy from the body. Apana vayu governs the outward flow of energy on the breath, with digestive elimination, and with menstruation. An ayurvedic doctor diagnoses this problem as per the explanation given by the patient and accordingly classifies the problem into vataja, pittaja, kaphaja or sannipataja (combination of all the three).
There are several proprietary medicines that help a lot like Actived India Menstra Med. It has certain herbs like Ashwagandha, Kawach Beej, Safed Musali, Gokharu, Kapikachhu, Guduchi, Amalaki and Shilajit in extract form. These herbs help a lot in cleansing the uterus for PCOD/PCOS, irregular periods, hirsutism and a lot of other symptoms that a female suffers.
HOME REMEDY –
The consumption of 1 or 2 tspn of Amla churna with half a glass of warm water, twice a day after the meal helps a lot with leucorrhoea. It works best if taken with honey as we all know that honey is best for kaphaja vikar. Also yashtimadhu churna, amalaki churna and lodhra churna mixed in equal amounts, and consume about half to one teaspoon of it twice a day after the meals helps a lot with period pains, excessive blood flow, back pain and of course leucorrhoea.
If the condition is very severe then one can simply mix 14-15 tspn of amalaki churna with 1-2 tspn of tankan bhasma and store it for use. The dosage of this will be half or one tspn with honey, twice a day after the meals with half a glass of warm water.
