PCOS- DIET, YOGA AND TREATMENT|

Let us understand the normal cycle of a female. We all know that a female has a 28 to 30 days normal cycle, where in the ovaries produce a mature egg every month , this egg reaches the uterus through fallopian tubes if she is pregnant. But if a female is not pregnant the egg is not conceived and it gets excreted in the form of periods. This is a normal 20 to 30 days cycle.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs.

This condition has a lot of symptoms out of which there are three main features ; lots of cysts on the ovaries, increase in the level of male hormones and irregular periods. Normally FSH and LH are the two hormones controlling the process of ovulation. If the FSH and LH levels decrease in the body the eggs do not mature and hence do not get excreted resulting in irregular periods. Also as the male hormone i.e. the androgen level increases, the female experiences hirsutism (excessive hair growth on the face, chin, hands, legs), voice gets heavier, weight gain, etc. In order to treat PCOS one needs to make lifestyle changes as it is a lifestyle disorder. 

AROMA THERAPY – 

In aromatherapy there are many aroma essential oils that help a lot in curing PCOS. One of the easiest formulas that one can do at home is that we can buy an electric aroma oil diffuser which is very easily available. Put around five drops of Aniseed oil in the diffuser at night before going to bed. When you inhale the properties of this oil through it’s smell while sleeping it will help in balancing all the hormones including the FSH and LH. 

WEIGHT AND PCOS –

As we know by now that weight and PCOS are inter- connected, so the right method for treating PCOS is to reduce body fat percentage. Start exercising, take a walk, do some weight training/ lifting and if this is not possible then opt for practicing yoga asanas on a regular basis early in the morning on an empty stomach. 

EXTRA TIPS –

2] One must remember to have a heavy breakfast in the morning.

3] Avoid carbohydrates and a lot of food intake at night time. 

4] Make sure you limit the intake of coffee, chocolates, cakes and sugar.

5] Eat mostly vegetarian food, especially fruits.
