Allergic Rhinitis and Ayurveda

Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the inside of the nose caused by an allergen, such as pollen, dust, mold, or flakes of skin from certain animals. Our nasal passage has superior, middle, inferior turbinate bones and maxillary bone. These bones obstruct the foreign particles from entering the nasal passage and mucus membrane which in turn produces a yellow, sticky kind of mucus. This sticky mucus prevents the entry of the small particles into the nasal passage, the cavity and up to the lungs. But if the immunity of a person is weak these small particles like dust, dirt, pollen, microscopic bacteria or germs can easily enter the nasal passage. These particles then cause irritation, inflammation or swelling. All of this is exhibited in the form of  heavy sneezing, running nose, blocked nose, headache, fever, etc. This condition was explained in Ayurveda about 5000 years ago under the term Pratishay.

Rhinitis can be classified into two; Allergic and non- allergic. In non- allergic rhinitis there is no presence of allergens. It occurs due to all year round symptoms like blocking or running of nose, irritation, etc. As per Ayurveda there are six types of Pratishay explained which we will be discussing some other time.

According to Ayurveda low digestive fire, increase in kapha dosha, virudh aahar can be the main causes of allergic rhinitis.

1] The first thing to be done is to identify the cause and once we identify it then removal of the same needs to be done.

2] Nasya therapy helps a lot in curing allergic rhinitis. Nasya is a Sanskrit word, which means ” related to nose”. So in this Nasya therapy, Ayurveda treatment is performed through the nostril. Ayurvedic medicine either in the oil or smoke forms is infused into the nostrils. We know that nasya therapy is something that has to be done under a doctor’s supervision but Pratimarsha Nasya is the type of nasya therapy which can be performed at one’s own house. The link of the video about doing nasya at home is mentioned below. To be specific Nasya with Shadbindu oil is very beneficial for Allergic Rhinitis.

3] Ginger detox tea made with certain ingredients easily available at home can help a lot. One can consume one cup twice a day. It is very refreshing and will help with the symptoms of this condition. One can also take 500ml water and add 20gm salt and 1 tsp of turmeric powder to it, boil for 10 mins and consume it in intervals of one hour. Even a tulsi decoction helps a lot with allergic rhinitis as tulsi has anti- bacterial, anti- fungal properties and is best for improving our immunity.

Ayurvedic proprietary medicines like Actived India Bronko Med syrup which have herbs like Triphala, Tankan, Kantakari, Manuka, Talispatra, Badisaunf, Haridra, Vasa, Tulsi, Mulethi, Somlata, Madhuk in extract form.
